ART(Active Release Techniques) is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
The practitioners at Elite Performance Clinic are licensed medical acupuncturists and received their training at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, Continuing Education department at McMaster University. This program utilizes the most current evidence through clinical trials, and systematic reviews for point selections and applications.
Medical acupuncture is particularly useful to resolve physical problems related to tension, stress and emotional conditions. The World Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including:

Dr. Derek Spence is the Chiropractor at Elite Performance Clinic. Dr. Spence often uses chiropractic spinal adjustments as a treatment method, but it really depends on the presenting condition. Your experience at Elite Performance Clinic will begin with an initial examination. Following your initial exam, Dr. Spence will discuss with you the nature or your condition and whether or not spinal adjustments would be beneficial. They will also discuss with you the risks and benefits of this approach. Should chiropractic adjustments not suit your comfort level, they will suggest to you other treatment options.
Chiropractors diagnose and treat injuries affecting the musculoskeletal system. That means they treat injuries to the spine, pelvis, joints and muscles of the body. In a nutshell, they treat various physical injuries. It is a misconception that chiropractors only treat the spine. Chiropractors use various therapeutic modalities. The most common form of treatment provided by chiropractors involves manual therapy to the joints and soft tissues. An integral component of chiropractic care is the examination and diagnosis that occurs prior to treatment. Chiropractors are trained doctors with the specific ability to diagnose conditions related to the spine, pelvis, extremity joints and the nervous system.
Chiropractic adjustment is perhaps the most common type of treatment provided by chiropractors. Most of the chiropractors in Burlington provide this service. A chiropractic adjustment is a non-invasive procedure performed with the chiropractors hands. It is also known as spinal manipulative therapy. A chiropractic adjustment is a very controlled procedure delivered by a skilled practitioner who has been extensively trained over the course of the four year chiropractic college curriculum. Adjustment is normally performed on spinal joints or the joints of the extremities. The main objective of a chiropractic adjustment is to reduce pain and improvement movement for patients. In addition to joint tightness, the muscles and tendons are often improved as a result of chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic care has been extensively researched. It has consistently shown that it is one of the most effective ways to treat musculoskeletal injuries.
A custom orthotic is a custom-made three-dimensional insert that is placed in your shoe to help the pain and discomfort caused by lower limb injuries.
Orthotics work by decreasing high-pressure areas, stabilizing foot alignment and cushioning the foot. Orthotics will not permanently change your anatomy and will function only when you are standing or walking on them.
Orthotics commonly used to relieve symptoms of common injuries, such as plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, neuromas, and various foot and ankle tendon injuries, as well as helping individuals with diabetes or arthritis. Orthotics complement other treatments such as physiotherapy, stretching, icing, massage therapy, acupunture and mobilization of foot.

At Elite Performance Clinic, we offer a wide variety of braces, both custom and off-the-shelf.
Braces are typically used to restrict undesired, potentially harmful motion and to allow desired motion. We provide custom knee braces for ligamentous knee injuries and carry braces for various types of injuries including:
Most insurance plans will cover the cost of many of these kinds of braces. For custom made braces our practitioners at Elite Performance Clinic will provide you with a written estimate which you can submit to your insurance company for approval prior to ordering the brace.
Please call your insurance company to confirm your specific coverage for custom made and off-the-shelf braces.
Fitting for braces is done onsite and can be done on the same day as your initial assessment if desired. Once fitted and ordered, the brace will be ready in 1-7 days (depending on the brace you require). For those without a confirmed diagnosis, tests such as x-ray or MRI may have to be ordered prior to fitting to determine the optimal custom brace prescription.
Osteopathy is the science of natural medicine that studies the human body by considering the totality of its interrelated systems.
Osteopathy is based on biomechanical principals as applied to the body. The main emphasis of the diagnosis and treatment is the restoration of structural integrity of the body. Osteopathy recognizes that pain and dysfunction stem from poor structural integrity of the body systems, including musculoskeletal and visceral systems. It must be emphasized that osteopathy is not an alternative to conventional medicine but can be an effective complement to modern medicine.
Physiotherapy is a health care profession primarily concerned with the remediation of impairments and disabilities and the promotion of mobility, functional ability, quality of life and movement potential through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention carried out by Physiotherapists.
As primary health care professionals, physiotherapists combine in-depth knowledge of how the body works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability.
With your independence in mind, a physiotherapist's goal is to restore, maintain and maximize your strength, function, movement and overall well-being.
Physiotherapists prescribe personalized therapeutic exercises, and provide essential education about the body, what keeps it from moving well, how to restore mobility and independence, and how to avoid or prevent bodily harm.
At Elite Performance Clinic, we believe in getting your stronger and fitter than you were before injury. We follow up to date research with treatment and exercise methods.

Sports injuries can occur to a number of different structures in the body or often a combination of tissues including muscles, ligaments and bone. Below we explain some of the more common types of sports injury.
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa or sac of fluid which is located in a joint between a tendon and a bone. The bursa is used to lubricate and reduce friction. When a bursa becomes inflammed it swells up and can be painful.
Common sports injuries involving bursa include knee bursitis or housemaids knee, elbow bursitis, trochantic bursitis at the hip and subacromial bursitis in the shoulder.
Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon which joins muscle to bone. They can become inflamed through over use where the injury will come on gradually, or tendonitis can occur following a strain or tear of a muscle which is not allowed to rest and heal properly. Tendinitis is also the term given to a number of other injuries which are not strictly inflammation of the tendon but have similar symptoms. These can include degeneration of the tendon (tendinosis) and inflammation of the sheath surrounding the tendon.
A strain is the term given to a tear in a muscle or tendon. A muscle strain is often graded 1, 2 or 3 depending on how bad they are. A grade 1 muscle strain may be just a few fibres torn where a grade 3 is a severe or complete muscle rupture.
A fracture is a broken bone. There are many different types of fracture depending on how the bone breaks including spiral, greenstick, oblique, transverse and avulsion which is where a tendon pulls a small part of the bone away. An open fracture is where the skin is broken and bone pokes through. This comes with an increased risk of infection and other complications. Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect a fracture.
A stress fracture is a hairline crack or very thin fracture in the bone caused by repetitive forces and over use. A stress fracture of the shin bone is a common sports injury. Stress fractures will often not show up initially on an X-ray but will become obvious once the bones has started to heal.
A sprain is an injury or tear to ligaments which connect bone to bone. Like strains a sprain can be graded 1, 2 or 3 depending on severity with a grade 3 sprain being a complete or almost complete rupture of the ligament. Ligament sprains are common in sports injuries especially at the knee joint and the ankle joint.
